Sydney Metro Northwest — systems, commissioning & design management
WM Studios was engaged directly on Australia’s first fully automated rapid transit network (formerly North West Rail Link) to deliver system design, implementation and commissioning systems, alongside design management processes for a multi-billion megaproject environment.
- Opened May 2019 · ~$7.3B AUD program
- 36 km network · 15 km twin tunnels · elevated Skytrain · 8 new stations
- OTS contract ~$3.7B (NRT consortium) — trains, signalling, operations to 2034
- Megaproject scale: autonomous fleet, signalling and systems integration across civil and systems packages
- Commissioning and design interfaces that had to stay controlled across multiple contractors and disciplines
- Need for design management processes that survive real program pressure, not slideware governance
- Operational readiness path toward a fully automated network — Australia’s first of its kind
- System design and implementation support across commissioning-critical digital systems
- Commissioning systems and workflows aligned to operations readiness and handover
- Design management processes spanning interfaces between civil, systems and delivery packages
- Program context: Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) Operations, Trains and Systems contract (~$3.7B) covering autonomous trains, signalling and operations/maintenance through 2034
- Network outcomes: 36 km of track, 15 km twin tunnels, elevated Skytrain and eight new stations on the broader Sydney Metro expansion
- Program opened successfully in May 2019 as Australia’s first fully automated rapid transit network
- Commissioning and design management discipline contributed to a systems-led opening — not a paper handover
- Proven experience at megaproject scale that underpins how WM Studios approaches complex systems delivery today
- Continuing expansion of Sydney Metro builds on the Northwest foundation
